Following the landmark announcement of a partnership between Konami and the Confederation of African Football (CAF) for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), the African eFootball console community moved quickly to celebrate the moment in-game. Konami introduced an AFCON-themed tournament within eFootball, inspiring players across the continent to organize a competitive, community-led event that showcased Africa’s growing passion for football esports.
The two-day tournament brought together players from 21 African countries, mirroring the official AFCON group-stage format. Gamers competed fiercely in the group stages, battling for qualification into the knockout rounds, just as their national teams do on the real-world AFCON stage. The format added authenticity to the competition and strengthened the connection between traditional football and esports.

The tournament featured a diverse lineup of top console players representing their nations:

A Dominant Run to the Title
Well-known eFootball competitor Momojuve, representing Senegal, emerged as the tournament champion. He capped off an impressive run by defeating Pes Freestyle of Morocco 2–1 in the final. Momojuve’s path to the title was particularly remarkable, as he went unbeaten throughout the tournament and completed the group stage without dropping a single point.
The competition offered a $1,000 prize pool, adding further incentive and prestige to the event despite it being entirely community-driven. Momojuve goes home with $500, with the 2nd and 3rd place finishers claiming $300 and $200, respectively.

A Signal for the Future of African Football Esports
Although the tournament was not an official Konami or CAF activation, its success highlights a clear opportunity. The enthusiasm, organization, and continental representation demonstrated by the community underline Africa’s readiness for structured football esports programs.
Konami already runs major esports activations in regions such as Asia and Europe, and the Konami–CAF partnership presents a strong foundation to extend similar initiatives to Africa. For CAF, this also represents a chance to follow the path taken by FIFA with FIFAe, integrating esports more formally into its football ecosystem.
As African gamers continue to organize, compete, and grow their communities, events like this signal a powerful future—one where AFCON is celebrated not only on the pitch, but also on the virtual field.
